The Darawiish movement was established in 1899 under the leadership of Mohammed Abdullah Hassan. It emerged as a religious and nationalist resistance against British, Italian, and Ethiopian influence in Somali territories. Las Anod played an important early role because of its strategic location in the Sool region and the strong local support the movement received there.
